Role Summary

The FabLab Support Technician ensures the smooth and safe operation of the SMU FabLab by providing technical assistance, maintaining equipment, and supporting students and faculty in their engineering, prototyping, and research activities. The role contributes to the development of hands-on learning by ensuring that all fabrication tools, machines, and digital workflows run efficiently and reliably.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate, maintain, and calibrate FabLab machines (3D printers, laser cutters, CNC routers, electronics tools, etc.).
  • Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting to minimize downtime.
  • Keep machine documentation, logs, and technical records up to date.

Technical Support to Students & Faculty

  • Assist users in fabrication tasks, electronics assembly, and prototype development.
  • Support engineering and research projects requiring mechanical, electronic, or digital fabrication tools.
  • Provide training sessions on machine use, digital workflows, and best practices.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with FabLab safety rules, procedures, and usage protocols.
  • Guide users in safe machine operation and enforce safety standards during daily activities.

Operations & Inventory Management

  • Manage consumables, materials, and spare parts; ensure stock availability.
  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and functional FabLab environment.

Workshops & Community Engagement

  • Support FabLab activities such as workshops, hackathons, innovation challenges, and open days.
  • Contribute to demonstrations and introductory sessions for visitors and partners.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical diploma (BTP, BTS, or equivalent) in Electronics, Automation, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, or related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English communication (spoken and written).
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication machines (3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines).
  • Strong skills in electronics, soldering, and microcontroller platforms (Arduino, ESP32).
  • Ability to read, prepare, or manipulate CAD files and operate digital fabrication workflows.

Preferred Skills

  • Previous experience in a FabLab, MakerSpace, or prototyping environment.
  • Basic proficiency with CAD/Design software (Fusion 360, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Exposure to IoT, robotics, or embedded systems projects.
  • Strong organizational skills and a collaborative mindset.
